Letter to ASUU

Dear ASUU members,

Firstly, I am tired of this façade you people are putting up to the entire world. You claim you are doing all this for the sake of students?? Please spare me. All of you are just hurt that our irresponsible government is up there, enjoying huge sums of money for doing absolutely nothing. If anything, those so called “lawmakers” are only cumulating our already overwhelming problems. For example , the legalization of child marriage. That development in my view  is an act of barbarianism.
So I actually get it, you guys are just upset with our insensate leaders. You all are toiling hard in the universities while some confused fellows are sharing all the spoils. Which in fact is a pathetic situation as the state of well-being in the country is pitiable.

That being said, I understand your plight. But you people should be considerate. Nelson Mandela once said that “EDUCATION IS THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON WITH WHICH YOU CAN USE TO CHANGE THE WORLD ” well that in essence means that the future of Nigeria is pointing in the direction of doom if our tertiary institutions are not re-opened soonest. I once heard an ASUU spokes-man say on the radio that they did not mind shutting down the university system for 3 years! He said it was done in Ghana and they did not mind implementing such in Nigeria. I was simply weakened within my spirits after hearing this.

I am not writing this to insult or to speak out of anger to any party. I am writing this to plead to your humane sides. I was in shock when I read that you guys rejected 600bn! At that point I actually took the threat I heard on the radio seriously. I understand that the demands have reached some 3 trillion naira or something? Let’s face it, that sum is blatantly over the top!

I am simply tired of sleeping and waking with nothing to do! I am tired of roaming the streets aimlessly like Cain in the Bible. I am tired of hearing comments like “eyah”, “pele”, “pray for ASUU” etc. I am tired of folks rubbing in comments like “that’s why private schools are good” or “you should have applied to unilorin”. I am so tired of people pitying me. All I want to do is return to school and complete my education as fast as possible. Some people say casually “go and look for a job”. They fail to remember that in Nigeria today, a full-fledged graduate is walking the streets everyday frantically looking for any job. Talk-less of a bloody undergraduate like me.

If some of you believe that strike action is the only language our government understands, you should also recall that most of their children are not in our public schools that are affected.

I know after a few weeks I resume , I will probably start hating school again! But right now, I miss the waking up early to make lectures, the “gala and drink”( I would have as meals the whole day), the running from lecture room to room, the late nights I keep just to pass those tests, the extremely crowded and noisy lecture rooms, the dozing off during lectures, the bustling dormitories ,the really cool lecturers and the overbearing ones.
I just want to return to school please!!!!!!
