03We Crave a different kind of buzz
This is a some-what late post and in that regard, I am also a culprit of what I want to rant about today. My topic is an obvious chip off lorde’s hit single, Royals. (btw, Royals was so cool it won 2 Grammies including song of the year). That’s blah blah blah. Let’s get to the order of the hour.
Its been about 5 weeks now since the abduction of the chibok girls, and I wish to express some displeasure to our attitude as a nation towards the incident. That goes without saying that I am also encouraged by the acts of valour by some select few, but as a nation we have failed.
From the gross incompetence of our President and his entire cabinet( it’s quite sad, but that is what it is) to the pushing of blames around by the elite in order to score cheap points, we have not acted as a concerned nation
I woke up on this Saturday about 3 weeks ago, 3rd of may 2014 to see some of my friends on BBM(Blackberry Messenger) with display pictures about the missing girls. That’s when it really hit me.
I had heard the news weeks ago but took it as one of the normal incidences that took place in our society. Truth be told, we all know that this kind of misfortunes happen quite frequently around us, from the city of Ibadan’s death dungeon, To Bomb blasts here and there. Then I thought to myself when would all this stop.
I took my phone out and did some research on the missing girls and soon discovered that The Nigerian missing girls story was fast gaining momentum Globally with different celebrities tweeting and ranting about the incidence.
Sadly, right here in my university many of us did not know what was happening, while In the United sates, United Kingdom etc protests were being staged but here in a University system in Nigeria, the average student did not know about this or just cared less.
I was hurting inside at how the situation in our country has brought out such Barbaric behavior in many of us. I wish there was something I could do, but I was somehow held aback by the thought of what I could do alone, a friend later came into my room and I was complaining bitterly to him when he got tired of my complaints he asked so what are you going to do about it?
The question might have been to mock my complaints but it shook something in me, I decided we would make home-made posters if he would assist me and paste it around our University to at least give people an idea of what was going on.
Immediately I got hold of some cash went to buy some extra free sheets some paper-tape and came into my room to make the posters. After I had completed the posters, we dragged another friend along and we headed into the university. One of us then brought up the idea of making video posts that we could upload on youtube and our instagram pages. We headed into the university and even put some of the posters on our chests to act as walking signboards. As we would have it, a good number of us had not heard about the happenings. So mission was accomplished.
We pasted our posters on the important boards in the school. An unfortunate thing that happened was the reaction of a very few students who saw the posters and made comments like “what’s now my business”. But Yes it is our business. This is our country, This is our world , Those girls are our fellow humans, and it is our right to protect them from some mad people who have gone completely nuts. I hear the international community is already offering help to us, but they fear our military might is rather incompetent to carry out this task. It’s been 5 weeks since our missing girls have been separated from their parents, 5 long, lonely weeks, I fear to imagine what hell they would have been put through.
OOur leadership is incompetent, the international community is trying to tread carefully, I don’t want to imagine a devastating end to this story, but I hope and sincerely believe in God to #BRINGBACKOURGIRLS
